Tupper Woman and Her Son Die in Tragic Mishap in Vermont
MRS. MATHILDA TESSIER AND SON, GLEN, KILLED BY CARBON MONOXIDE FUMES FROM HEATER OF CAR, STALLED OVERNIGHT IN SNOWBANK
The bodies of Mrs. Mathilda Tessier, 29, and her 4-year-old son Glen, of 9 Lake st., who died Sunday from escaping fumes from the heater of their stalled automobile, were removed to the home of her brother, Albert Sterling, at Shawville, Quebec.
Funeral services were held this afternoon at 2:30 in that village.
Mrs. Tessier and her son, and Oliver Disorda, 29, of Forestdale, Vt., were found dead by her husband, Albert Tessier of this village, Sunday in their automobile, stalled overnight in a snowbank near Mandon, Vt. Two others in the stalled vehicle Norman Damon, 57, and Norma Panoushek, 24, were reported in “critical condition” in a Rutland Hospital.
From a rather confused Associated Press account of the tragedy it appears that Mr. Tessier was the driver of the car, in which the group was returning Saturday from a shopping trip in Rutland to the logging camp which he operates near Wheelersville, Vt. When the automobile stalled in a snowbank Mr. Tessier, according to the AP report, went on to his camp in a panel truck driven by Damon. “Tessier said that after they arrived at the camp, Damon picked up some tow equipment and returned to the stalled car, while remained behind to cook a meal. Tessier continued that he fell asleep after cooking the meal, and that when he awoke Sunday he hitched a team of horses to a bobsled, but then decided to walk the eleven miles back to the car because of the severe cold.”
The story is not clear as to how Damon came to be among the victims of the tragedy, but apparently he must have stalled his own car in a futile attempt to tow the other vehicle from the snowdrifts, and been forced to spend the night there.
News of the tragedy came as a shock to friends of the Tessier family here, particularly to their neighbors in Lake st., where blonde, curly-headed little Glen Tessier was a general favorite.
